Born in Beirut in 1931, Huguette Caland took her first painting lessons at 16 with Manetti, an Italian artist living in Lebanon. Caland began to pursue an artistic practice full time following the death of her father, Beshara el Khoury, one of the founders of the Lebanese independence and its first President. After spending four years at the American University of Beirut where she studied Fine Art, Caland moved to Paris in 1970. In 1987, she moved to California and established a studio there. Her work included painting, sculpture, and fashion design. Her work has been acquired by Centre Pompidou, La Bibliothèque Nationale, The British Museum, Tate St. Ives, LACMA, Armand Hammer, Museum of Fine Art Houston, San Diego Museum of Art, Palm Springs Museum of Art, and the F. Weissman Art Foundation.
