The compositions of Nick Terry’s watercolors are distilled from the inherent qualities of the materials he works with, and the openness of his method to unforeseen developments. In addition to his ongoing practice of producing large scale ‘color field’ multi-layered watercolors, for the latest series, dating from the past several years, large rolls of application tape and vinyl-saturated papers are employed as substrates. The thin, crepe-like paper induces the paint to pool into rivulets, pools, and crevices. He edits down from each original large-scaled sheet, isolating and developing areas of interest, working free from the confines of a predetermined proportion. The scale and shape of each finished painting is the direct result of this process.

Exhibitions include solo exhibitions at Bartha Contemporary (London 2020), Gensler Architecture, New York (2014, 2016), and There Is No Such Thing As Monochrome, BWA Modern Art, Tarnów, Poland (2017). He has participated in numerous group exhibitions, including at the Danese Gallery, New York, NY (2015), Charlotte Jackson Gallery, Santa Fe, NM (2015), the Marfa Book Company, Marfa, TX (2018). In 2016 he participated in Oficina de Arte, an artist-residency program in Mexico City. Recent publications include Tape Paintings, produced by Ken Botnick, with an essay by art historian Matthew Simms. Nick lives and works in Marfa, Texas.
